Hello! I’m running to fill this year’s part-time Accessibility Officer role because I care about protecting the best interests of students at Uni of Leicester with accessibility needs, who deserve a better deal than they might be currently getting.
Between my personal experience with fluctuating health while completing a degree and experience in representing the student voice with the student magazine, I believe that I have the passion and empathy needed to make a good part-time officer.
Here are my main points:
Champion the current work of full-time officers in issues relating to accessibility
Including a compassionate approach to Mitigating Circumstances & blended learning, ensuring sports facilities are accessible to all, increasing participation of disabled students in activities and student voice.
Maintain accessible, recorded teaching – with more consistency across the university
My main priority as Accessibility Officer this year would be to ensure that the Ignite model of teaching is held to account from an accessibility lens.
Module handbooks currently state that lectures ‘will typically also be recorded’ but I would seek to ensure that all lectures (both in-person and live-streaming online) are recorded and uploaded with good quality audio and accurate captions.
I would aim to liaise with Course Reps across the university to ensure students are able to comfortably feed back on where accessibility needs are not being met.
A more fluid approach to remote learning for those that need it
Some departments currently require students to submit a mitigating circumstance request with evidence and “exceptional circumstances” to study online for this semester.
Requiring students to prove that they are ‘disabled enough’ or in an extreme enough circumstance to qualify is unnecessarily intrusive.
I would hope to help in facilitating a more flexible approach across the board where campus-based students may access remote alternatives already being held, when needed.
Not all disabilities are visible’ signs on all disabled toilets across campus
1 in 2 people with invisible disabilities have received negative comments in public for using accessible toilets, according to Crohns and Colitis UK.
Following in the footsteps of major supermarkets by introducing ‘not every disability is visible’ signage would encourage people to re-think before passing judgement and create a more inclusive environment for those with invisible illnesses.
